Alan Border has been taking piano lessons since the age of 7. He started his private piano lessons at the Ursula Cauffiel School of Music, which later then became Forte School of Music. During high school he began studying under Christopher Narloch, a graduate student at Bowling Green State University(BGSU), and then later under Karl Larson, a doctoral student also from BGSU. Alan stayed under Larson until he graduated from high school and began his studies under Dr. Michael Boyd as an undergraduate student in the Bachelors of Music degree program for piano at the University of Toledo.
As a soloist Alan has performed in many piano master classes hosted at the University of Toledo as part of the Dorothy MacKenzie Price series. He has also taken part in The University’s annual Concerto & Aria competition. In the spring of 2013 Alan performed in a recital featuring piano duets by Dr. Michael Boyd and his students held at the Toledo Museum of Art inside the Great Gallery. As required for his degree he has also performed two solo piano recitals from memory that were 50 minutes in length.
As an accompanist Alan has performed in concerts and music outreach events hosted by his fraternity Phi Mu Alpha: Sinfonia, accompanying its choir. He has also accompanied vocal students in an Opera Gala held at the University of Toledo. In the greater Toledo area Alan is an active accompanist for school choirs and musicals, OMEA competitions, university auditions, and musicals. Recently he has performed piano roles for the musicals “Oliver” and “Bonnie and Clyde.”
